Annie E. Casey Foundation - Works to build better futures for disadvantaged children and their families in the United States - In 2004, Kent Family Center was honored by the organizations' Families Count initiative for its innovative work in building stronger families.

Q. What is SOS?
A. Shared Opportunity Service Inc. (SOS) is the nonprofit 501(c) (3) that seeks funds and develops family support programs and services for families and individual family members in Kent County. SOS is the organization that sponsors the Kent Family Center located at 601 High Street in Chestertown.
Q. Why is SOS important to the community?
A. We know that children do well, when families do well, and families do better when they live in supportive communities. SOS is helping to build a stronger community by providing guidance and information that changes lives. Programs are designed to empower families to be self-sufficient and healthy thereby capable of contributing to a more resilient community and positive future for Kent County.
Q. What are the services offered at the Kent Family Center and who is eligible to participate?
A. Through collaboration with agency partners SOS provide programs focusing on eight core services; Children’s programming, Parent Education, Self-sufficiency, Service Coordination, Peer Support, Wellness Education, In-Home Parent Education, and Outreach, Collaboration and Resources. Families from diverse backgrounds and all economic circumstances can participate at the Kent Family Center however primary consideration is given to at-risk families and first time parents.
Q. How is SOS's Kent Family Center funded?
A. Kent Family Center is primarily funded by Friends of the Family (FOF), a Maryland nonprofit providing culturally-sensitive, community-based services for families. As a local non-profit SOS is dependent on a variety of funding sources including; State funded grants, private donations, fundraising activities and in-kind donations. Family Center programs are supported by qualified staff, and volunteers and students of local colleges who donate their time.
